Taken by the Hand

Mom was known for many things. She always brought dessert to family dinners. She loved to hear and SHARE stories about her grandchildren. She loved Christmas. I’d venture to say, however, that she was best known for her faith.

Mom’s faith was not an ordinary faith. She had the kind of faith that I imagine David had when he fought Goliath. It was simply unshakable, and ALL of her life, from simple things – like praying before meals- to big things like facing cancer, she used it all to try to know her Savior a little better. She always had a hunger for more. She wanted to serve Jesus because she knew with all confidence that He had her back…. and held her hand.

Mom was a “doer.” She liked bread, but certainly didn’t eat the bread of idleness. Now she definitely could be a little hard-headed at times, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing! One of the things Mom was hard-headed about was bringing the Holy Eucharist to an elderly woman named Sue, who was homebound due to a stroke. She did this weekly for four years!

When Mom became sick and could no longer bring Sue the Holy Eucharist, Dad stepped up and offered to continue this act of love. He was reaching a little out of his comfort zone but he knew how much it would mean to Mom and it did. To give Dad support, I went with him a couple times and both of us met Sue.

Sue was lovely but mostly communicated with us through gentleness and love that beamed through her eyes. I tried to wrap my mind around how she could exude such peace when she had been confined to that bed for 4 years! It was early in our visits with Sue, that we told her the sad news that Mom had passed. I’ll never forget her reaction as big tears fell from those peaceful eyes.

Stunningly, Sue herself, passed away, exactly two weeks after Mom did. Her son said, “Mom just never got over Lucille passing. She was her best friend.” It all suddenly made sense. After four years of Mom taking Jesus to Sue in the Holy Eucharist, she took Sue by the hand and led her to the presence of Jesus once again, but this time they were both with Him face to face. I bet it was quite a reunion. I imagine there was joy my mind can’t even comprehend. And there is no more bed for Sue.

What a fitting tribute to a special lady and sister-in-law. She was a blessing to each of us, and how nice to know that she brought The Holy Eucharist to her friend. It was a privilege for each of them to share the presence of Jesus together. Her faith will live on in her children and grandchildren.

Aunt Helen, you are so very kind! There’s nothing that would give Mom any greater joy than to know her faith lives on in her loved ones! We’re all on that journey. Nice that we can travel together!

What a writer you are! I know your mother is looking down from above and beaming with pride over the lovely story you wrote. I remember your telling us about Sue, but I didn’t know she had passed. I am sure that was God’s timing. I can only imagine what those two are doing now— no restrictions, no holds barred! I hope you soon reach the point, if you haven’t already, where your grief is replaced with pleasant thoughts of special memories and that you will even double over with laughter as you imagine all she and Sue are doing! For sure, Heaven will never be the same since those two arrived! Love you, sweet girl! Keep writing!

Thank you for your sweet thoughts, Sherry! Mom had several loved ones who beat her “home” and I can only imagine that “heaven hugs” are even better than earthly ones! I have so much to be grateful for, including loved ones like you!

What a beautiful tribute not just to your mother but to the faith that she must have lived everyday of her life. To truly walk with Jesus hand in hand is a lifetime blessing not everyone experiences and then to see Him face to face will be a joy like no other.
Thank you for sharing this with me.
I loved our visit today and so appreciate the loaf of bread. Pat
